Review of 2013 Oscar Short Film Nominees: Live Action, Documentary, and Animated

For this special edition of the show, I was joined by Spoiler Alert Radio editor and co-producer Paul Elsnau to discuss the 2013 Academy Award short film nominees for the live-action, documentary, and animation categories.

The films are packaged by Shorts International and are screened at cinemas around the world prior and following the Academy Awards ceremony.

Jon Alpert - Oscar Nominated Documentary Director, Producer, and Reporter - America Undercover, The Last Cowboy, Baghdad ER, China's Unnatural Disaster, and Redemption

Jon has traveled widely as an investigative journalist, and has made films for NBC, PBS, and HBO. Over the course of his career, he has won 15 Emmy Awards and three DuPont-Columbia Awards.  

Jon has reported from Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Cuba, China, and Afghanistan.

In 1972, Jon and his wife founded the Downtown Community Television Center, one of the country's first community media centers.   In 1991, while employed by NBC, Jon was the first American journalist to bring back uncensored video footage from the first Persian Gulf War, has interviewed Fidel Castro several times, and was one of the few Western journalists to have conducted a videotaped interview with Saddam Hussein since the Persian Gulf War.

Jon has been nominated for a 2010 Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary, Short Subject for China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province.  

Jon was nominated again for the 2013 Academy Awards in the same category for Redemption, about the variety New York City's canners - the men and women who survive by redeeming bottles and cans they collect from curbs.

Matt Gordon - Director, Writer, and Producer - TV documentaries, The Honeyfields, The Dynamiter

Matt holds degrees from Middlebury College and the directing program at the American Film Institute

Matt's thesis film, The Honeyfields, was accepted at film festivals all over the world and won numerous prizes. 

Matt has been working in film for several years, including making documentaries for television on topics ranging from politics to resident doctors to the youth in Serbia during the Bosnian War.

More recently, Matt completed the award winning feature film, The Dynamiter, a coming of age film, about 14 year Robbie who must face the fact that his dream of a family may only be a dream and he might just lose the only family he's ever had, set in the Summer in Mississippi. 

The Dynamiter was also selected for the prestigious Film Movement Series.

Richard Comeau - Film Editor from Montreal - Maelstrom, The Five of Us, The Necessities of Life, Polytechnique, and the Oscar nominated film, War Witch

Richard has been editing in film and television for over twenty years. 

Some of Richard's film credits include: 2 Seconds, Maelstrom, Chaos and Desire, The Marsh, Mambo Italiano, The Five of Us, A Family Secret, Truffe, The Necessities of Life, Polytechnique, and City of Shadows.

One of Richard's most recent films is the Oscar nominated film, War Witch, about Komona, a 14 year old girl in Sub-Saharan Africa who tells the story of her life during a civil war to the unborn child growing inside her.
